Concert: Monteverdi's Vespers of the Virgin

The Instrumental Ensemble La Société des Concerts and the Vocal Ensemble of the Rouen Conservatory are very pleased to present in concert Les Vêpres de la Vierge by Claudio Monteverdi under the direction of Karl Espinasse with the support of the association La Porte des Chants.

 In 1610, Monteverdi dedicated to Pope Paul V his famous Vespers to the Virgin, his most masterful sacred work. Borrowing elements from his Orfeo published a few years earlier (and considered the first opera in the history of music), he delivered a score mixing various influences, thus creating a new genre, between the great Gregorian tradition and the progress of the Renaissance. Under the direction of Karl Espinasse, 15 musicians from the Société des Concerts will join the Ensemble Vocal du Conservatoire de Rouen to perform this monumental score, which they know well, and which they had the chance to practice last year. A rare work, rarely performed, delicate because of its large scale, this cathedral of sound will resound one last time this year. See you on November 30 at the Basilica!
